Re: Pain Killers

Muscle soreness after a workout is normal. Instead of taking something, make sure you are stretching after your workouts and drinking plenty of fluids. There is new research going on at Iowa State University on drinking milk post workouts. They are finding that the amino acids in milk help the body repair faster, resulting in less delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). You also need to keep moving in the days after your workouts. The more blood you can put in that area, the faster you will repair. Try this route first. It is always best to avoid taking pills if you don't absolutely need them. If you are having a lot of soreness, you may consider taking your intensity down a bit and working up to it slowly.

Thanks but I'm well aware of all of that. I've simply taken much more time off recently and DOMS gets really bad on my lower body and I don't want to lower my intensity anymore than I already have for my leg workouts. Based on past experience from what I'm feeling 24 hours after working out I imagine this bout with DOMS will last for 4 days. Since I sit all day at work when I do get up it's a bit rough so I wouldn't mind taking something to take the edge off a bit.

Re: Pain Killers

It probably wont help you NOW, but if it happens again dose up on your anti-oxidants. Vit C, E, ALA, Selenium - post workout, it will help the pain associated with free radical damage. Glutamine will also help to a degree.

Re: Pain Killers

I know you are looking for something to take orally but why wouldn't you try anything topically? I mean if you have lower back pain you could always try using a heating pad. Personally I always thought those ThermaCare wraps were wonderful. You stick them where you want and its like a heating pad for 8 hours. Can even sit in the office with them and they don't smell like Ben-Gay or other topical ointment can.

Or like mentioned, you could use something like Ben-Gay, IcyHot, or some other topical cream. I've used AsperCream and think thats decent especially since it doesn't smell.

Just my thoughts but if you're having lower back pain, you need to loosen it up too. JMHO.
