It probably says to avoid supplements because it's pretty easy to hit 50-100 grams on whole foods.
As far as saying to eat less protein... for your average person, that's probably true. Your average person sits on their *** all day at work and then goes home and sits in front of the tv or computer and doesn't do much that breaks down muscle more than naturally happens or that causes muscle to rebuild itself back even bigger, and so doesn't need as much protein as someone who is working out, lifting weights, etc regularly.
