Is it ok to heat powdered whey protein? For example, I'm trying to add some oatmeal to my nutrition plan, and I'd like to add some protein to it to boost the nutrient values. Can I mix in the powder with the oatmeal BEFORE I cook it (it's the instant oatmeal you make in the microwave) or am I better off mixing it in AFTER it's already cooked? Or does it matter?
It's best to mix it after. Heat starts to break it down and just dumping a scoop in after it's had a minute to cool down a scosh, it will help to retain the BV of the protein. Most whey packages make a point to note that all processing takes place at low temperatures for just that reason.
