Whey Protein Question

Is it ok to heat powdered whey protein? For example, I'm trying to add some oatmeal to my nutrition plan, and I'd like to add some protein to it to boost the nutrient values. Can I mix in the powder with the oatmeal BEFORE I cook it (it's the instant oatmeal you make in the microwave) or am I better off mixing it in AFTER it's already cooked? Or does it matter?

Re: Whey Protein Question

It's best to mix it after. Heat starts to break it down and just dumping a scoop in after it's had a minute to cool down a scosh, it will help to retain the BV of the protein. Most whey packages make a point to note that all processing takes place at low temperatures for just that reason.

Re: Whey Protein Question

Protein has a tendency to DENATURE when heated, hence the hard boiled egg.

The least amount of heat is the best idea and I really wouldn't put it into hot oatmeal at all...you might get a hopeless goop!

Re: Whey Protein Question

I never had any problems with it. It makes it taste better IMHO.

I agree. I dump 20% of my mixed morning load on my cooked oats every morning, then drink the remaining portion. Yummmmmmm.
