Kay, so whats the solution??

im confuzzled!! mmakpe. u all know my story GOAL: Get muscles and actually have a healthy figure be4 summer!!! mmkay? well, i know i have to do a lot of strength training, but i read other posts and says not to do so much cardio? u lose muscle? or should i just eat more? lol. thats hard to do! i skip rope every day i have nothin goin on. but i usually have gym class, dancing or badminton going on, so i dont bother jump roping then. so technically i have cardio like evryday. and i walk A Lot. like in the hallways and stuff..

im so confused! what should i do??

If you "want to get muscles" you have to lift weights and eat lots of protein. At age 14, however, a lot of doctors would tell you NOT to train with weights yet... not that I'm a doctor or anything, but I've always heard 16.

I wouldn't count any "cardio" where you are not in "constant" motion and really "working" (i.e. elevated heart rate, breaking a sweat, etc.) for at least 20 minutes. Walking as part of your normal day definitely doesn't count.

By the way, you burn almost as many calories ironing clothes as you do playing badminton on a minute-for-minute comparison (4.2 for ironing, 5.2 for recreational badminton).

really? freakish. i eat a lOT of protein. meat, omgosh i cant live without! we had a roast beef last nite, frig me, 3 big peices (no fat), and today we had it with our stirfry and i had a LOT with almonds yum! and yogurt. wow. im amazed. and actually i started eating for like a WEEK and i am feelin sum meat on my bones! im impressed! haha...and ill only be working with like 5 lbs weights.hhaa im not THAT strong! lol

But, for your current body weight, you do not need to do much cardio. I still think you should focus on body weight exercises until you have gained more weight. A little jump rope or whatever you choose to do once in a while is ok but cardio is a calorie burning exercise, and you absolutely don't need to be on a calorie deficit. Just use moderation.
All the protein you're eating will be very helpful to build and support muscle too.

Only Philly would know how many calories you burn ironing! Thats too funny. No more wrinkles for me I am changing my cardio to an all ironing routine. Feel free to drop off shirts or pants that you need done.

HahHahahaHa!! o u guys r 2 cute! lol. okay, haha im going to love this because like, i enjoy my lazy days sitting around, watching tv feeling NO guilt! well, today i did push ups till i was red in the face and i lifted 5 lb weights till i got sore(i know, for u guys u can lift like...300 lbs, but haha im still little). but u say weight lifting isnt good for me? then what other exercises either than pushups(boring!) can i do?

Ohh..! and i ate like nonstop protein today, and like! wow all the health food u can get! a BAGEL with CREAM CHEESE! crackers n chesse, yogurt, granola bars, banana, like wow. unreal. and way more. and for supper? i had like ALOT! haha

this;ll be my last annoying thread. i am just so pumped. the muscle and figure i strive for is really on its way!

Light weights are fine. You can also do dips, pullups (or an easier version, lying on the ground under s chair or table and pulling your body up to the edge), various tricep extentions and kickbacks, squats (or single leg squats), overhead presses (with dumbells), rows etc. Doing a search online for "bodyweight exercises" or "muscle exercises" might help come up with more ideas with pictures and detailed descriptions.
PS. Cream cheese, not good. lots of bad fat.

Who says weight training is not good for kids under 16? According to my certifications, (American Counsil on Exercise and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) weight training is fine for children as long as you focus on form first and use fairly light wieghts to begin with. When form is perfect, you can progress to heavier wieghts as you would with adults.

Why do you say it is only okay to do "body wieght" exercises. How is that any different? Dips were reccomended....dips can really tear up the shoulder girdle if not performed correctly, whereas a tricep pulldown on a cable machine has a lot less risk of injury.

The reason I've usually read for younger teens and younger not lifting weights was a growth issue. Your body isn't done growing yet but the effects of lifting weights causes your growth plates to close up sooner, resulting in stunted growth.

I don't have the scientific background to argue for or against that, but it makes sense to me with what I do know. It also makes sense when I look at a lot of the super buff guys, who probably started lifting weigts early, and see that they are relatively short.

Hello! As it goes for all things, moderation is the key. You are not training for professional sports/competitions so keep it simple.

Gaining weight via weight training is not the only type of weight you need. I would say go for the cream cheese your young body needs adequate fat stores to produce the appropriate hormones for development.

I think some light weight training is wonderful for young bodies but serious lifting is largely for those who are done growing. Pick up one of those weight sets with the foam-like covering (they typically come with their own case and include a set of 3, 5, and 10 pound weights); they will give you slight resistance to tone and shape.

It sounds like you are doing wonderfully Sammy and I know many of us are incredibly proud of you and your progress! Your posts are not annoying . Keep up the good work and don't stress too much over the details .

I have to come to the defense of Nax.
1) Her post says quite the opposite, it starts off saying light weights are fine
2) She doesn't say it is only ok to do "body weight" exercises, she says she recommends them
3) she also says check websites for proper form regarding the comment on dips.

Also, Sammy doesn't have a gym membership, so i'm trying to give ideas to do at home using only bodyweight and already purchased dumbells.

Ooh. u guys are so supporitve! haha no, we dont have a gym membership thing here, otherwise id be there in a heartbeat! haha neways, ill just stick with my pushups and lifts with the 5 lbs weights until its no prob for me. then maybe i can get into somethin else. and i am a shorty. haha i think im done growing but im not 2 shuree....
