Believe it or not, you probably cover the same amount of ground in the same amount of steps whether you are walking or jogging. Watch people on the treadmill at the gym and take note of where their feet hit the belt, no matter whether they are running or walking.
But I'd say to check both out (for example, walk the 20 feet and then jog the same distance) and count your steps and then use an average of the two. It's better to underestimate the distance you've run than it is to overestimate it.
