My workout....

I go to the gym 7 days a week. Cardio every day, weights 3 times a week. People tell me that i am doing too much cardio, and i will burn muscle, not fat. First of all i have alot of muscle on my body, and still want to burn some fat. I just quit smoking, and fear gaining weight! I do 1 hr cardio 4 days a week and 30-45min on days i lift. Does this really sound like too much? I also in a fitness instructor program and do pilates in the evening 5 days a week. Thanks for any replies......

Re: My workout....

yes, too much. 5 days a week 45 min MAX - increase intensity not distance. Look at a marathon runner vs a sprinter. If your concerns is fat gain put more emphasis on diet not cardio.

Congtratulations on quiting smoking. That is probably your biggest hurdle. Working out will be easy but you just have to keep it up.

Re: My workout....

Yikes that's a scary workout regimen. I find I feel so much more refreshed when I do my workouts on weekdays and rest on the weekend. Fridays I usually go a little more intense so I can barely finish the workout. Two days off rests everything up and I'm ready to start fresh on Monday. Anybody have anything to add? I'd be curious to hear from someone who's done both 7 and 5 day/week workouts and see what their thoughts are...

Re: My workout....

I'm the same way as Nixona. I work hard Monday-Friday and rest on Saturday and Sunday (but I do count my housecleaning on Sundays as hard work ). I tried going 7 days a week and it wore me down and I didn't have any excitement to look forward to. Mondays are bad days so I look forward to taking out all my aggression at the gym.

I agree, I'd rather look like a sprinter than a marathon runner.

From what I understand about smoking, the weight gain comes from the increased appetite during withdrawals; stress of withdrawals brings on higher cortisol levels which could lead to stress related eating too.

So if your appetite in under control I don't think you need to worry especially if you are eating right. I'm thinking you could let up a bit on the cardio and still be fine weight wise, 30 minutes is plenty of cardio I think...
