Sweat has Ammonia smell? - Exercise & Fitness Message Board

Hey, I remember reading a topic somewhere on here about somebody who had this problem. Unfortunately I can't find it now...Ammonia in the sweat means your body is breaking down Nitrogen from (muscles?) and to prevent it, you should look at eating more....protein? Was that it? I don't THINK water plays a part in it, I'm getting 1.5-2 gallons of water per day.

Hm, I thought the ammonia thing happens when someone eats too much protein (and doesn't drink enough water).

Without a long technical explanation here is whats happeneing. The source of the amonia smell is from Nitrogen and Nitrogen is a left over product from heavy amounts of aminos being burned off. Two possible conditions can exist:

1) You may be burning excess aminos due to inadequate amounts of fats and carbs to fuel your workout.

2) Fluid intake may be low and the Nitrogen is not deluted or released in urine

Problem really isn't related to protein intake

Ok, sorry, memory isn't what it used to be, but I think you hit it on the head Chappy. I drank roughly 2 gallons of water yesterday throughout the day, so save some fluid imbalance it has to do with diet? I think I'm good on carbs, I eat mainly fruits and vegetables at all my meals. Yesterday for example Orange, apple, spinach salad with mushrooms and tomatoes, brocolli, more than joe blow eats. I'm guessing my fat could be low? Whats the rule of thumb on fat intake for weight loss? X grams per pound of lean body mass?
