Dizziness and Shortness of Breath during Cardio

Hello Board,

I've got a question or two...
I'm a 20yr old female who has been smoking for about 5yrs (I know, its awful)
I've worked out on and off the last few years, but only got serious about it the last few months. I have a trainer I see, and although hes provided me with a great ruitine, I still have a few concerns.
My biggest is this;
I'm supposed to do 20-30min of cardio per workout, and since I was told the eliptical machine would be enough, thats my weapon of choice.
The only problem is that after being on the machine for only a few minutes, I start getting short of breath and a little dizzy. Coincidentally, on the right hand corner of the machine it reads; "If you experience chest pains, dizziness, or shortness of breath, stop immidiately" or something like that.
In order to hopefully avoid that, I recently started doing circuit... in hopes of breaking up the 20 min into 4 seperate sesctions. Unfortunately, that hasn't worked. After roughly 2 minutes, I'm light headed, short of breath, and slightly dizzy. However I still continue regardless. The feeling usually doesnt subside until about a 1/2 hour AFTER my workout.
I had a check up about a year ago, and had my heart listened to... doc said it was fine. And although I've been smoking, I was told my lungs sound pretty clear as well.
Any ideas?

Is there something seriously wrong with me, or is this common?

How long do you eat before you work out? Are you getting a reasonable amount of calories? If you eat lunch then go work out 4 hours late, maybe your blood sugar is crashing? Also you said you had a checkup and they listened to your heart, did they take your blood pressure? Was it normal? Lastly, do you take a multivitamin or something with iron in it?

Re: Dizziness and Shortness of Breath during Cardio

I know I might be wrong in doing this, but I work out on an empty stomach 1st thing in the morning. I have IBS, which prevents me being able to eat within the first hour of being up (i guess it just takes my tummy longer to wake up). However, I eat as soon as I'm done.
And no, I dont regularly take multivitmins since they sometimes tend to cause my stomach discomfort.

Do you ever get light headed, dizzy, out of breath when not working out? Could you be Anemic? (Iron deficiency) I think it's pretty common in women and is usually easy to rectify.

What does your diet look like? It might not hurt to schedule a checkup at the doc and ask them to run some blood tests, just to make sure everything is OK.

Its possible, since it does happen occasionally when not working out. Usually though, its accompanied by a general - all around ill feeling.
I've gotten blood work done when complaining about this, but continue getting the Irritable Bowel Syndrome run around.

My diet mostly consists of egg white wraps, salads, grilled chicken, and lots of tuna... and the occasional carb binge.

Might want to just take it slow to begin with. I don't know how hard you're pumping along, but drop the intensity to a more comfortable, sustainable level and see if it's just a matter of conditioning. I had the same problem when I first started cardio. Just took a while to build myself up to the point where I could do more than brisk walking without passing out or hurling.
Can you drink anything before working out? Juice might be an option as well.

I do not think there is anything seriously wrong with you. Sometimes while jogging, I feel the same way and I"ve had TONS of tests this last year in general. My heart is great, my lungs, I think you may be pushing yourself a bit. Why don't you back it down a bit and when you think you're better, turn it up again. Good luck!!

Re: Dizziness and Shortness of Breath during Cardio

Although it could be something more serious, i would be inclined to chalk it up to smoking and being out of shape.
Smoking just doesnt do anything good for your lungs. Combine that with just starting cardio- Im betting your body just isnt getting the oxygen it needs. Take it slow, and quitting would be a huge plus. Im an ex smoker myself. Quitting will make cardio a much much more enjoyable experience (im not even going into the other health benefits, im sure your well aware).

Re: Dizziness and Shortness of Breath during Cardio

Thanks for all your advice guys!
I went back to the gym today... but not before waking up extra early and giving myself time to eat a small snack before heading to the gym.
I had 1/2 a slice of pumpernickel bread with 1/2 slice of low fat cheese (i rarely eat bread, but i figured a small piece couldnt really hurt that early in the morning)
I started with weights this time (since I usually start with a cardio warm up, and recently read that I should do that after weights) and started getting a little dizzy from that. I tried to take longer breaks between sets than I normally do and that seemed to help a tiny bit.
By the time I was ready to move onto cardio I was already pretty pooped. I got on the eliptical, and pretty much couldnt bear more than 5 minutes. However, my obsessive nature wouldnt allow me to leave without doing at least 20min of cardio... so I hopped on the bike... which wasn't nearly as bad on my breathing as the eliptical. So after 15min on the bike, I knew my body couldnt take any more and left.
Is the bike just as good?
