Re: Very out of shape! Alternating Jogging/Walking
But unfortunately six minutes isnt enough to do much good for your body. You're far better off walking briskly for 20-30 minutes and then building up. Start with different intervals if you have to (4 minutes walking, 1 minute jogging) and increase intensity every few sessions from there. It won't take too long to get into shape. The body adapts surprisingly quickly.

Another possibility is that you join the YMCA or other Wellness center that has a pool. It would allow you to not have to support all of your weight while you exercise.
Re: Very out of shape! Alternating Jogging/Walking
I have to do the walk/jog thing because it's my knee (2 knee surgeries) that gives out before I do, but I remember when I was just getting back into working out I would give out before the knee does.
However, I walk/jog for a total of 30 minutes. I start off by walking a lap on the treadmill, then jog a whole lap, then walk, jog, etc, etc, etc. i try and walk a speed of 3.8 - 4.0, then jog at a speed of 4.2 - 4.4. This works for me....I'm trying to get to 45 min, but the knee just can't take it yet.

Carfan,
Keep it up and keep good records. Do the three cycles 3 or 4 times a week this month and then add a FOURTH cycle next month...and a FIFTH the month after. Then maybe 2 minutes run and one minute walk.
Little by little you'll get to a GOOD place!
The body adapts VERY well to exercise.

You may want to check out some running sites on the web for suggestions. I started with a run / walk program and you'll be happy to know that your endurance can increase with time. good luck.

CARFAN -
I am like you. I can get up to 2 minutes jogging (slow) but my heart rate gets up too high. I am learning to watch my heart rate in my training. My body may feel like going longer or faster, but if my heart rate is too high (160 bpm), I know its time to slow down a little . I try to keep my heart rate in the 140-150 zone for my age. I have been walking as fast as I can instead of jogging. I think its better for my knees. I got up to 4.2 mph today for a few minutes before I slowed down. I am trying to lose weight and build up my lung strength. I have asthma and chonic inflammation, so I would be ecstatic if I could jog! But I know it takes time....
Re: Very out of shape! Alternating Jogging/Walking
Try just walking. Walking is really, really good. I was woefully out of shape, started walking and got up to about half an hour and then I began working out with bodyweight cals using Combat Conditioning and light weights.
