question on cardio recovery meal?

I know it is important to have a post workout meal/shake as soon as possible following a weight lifting session, but I was wondering if the same applies to cardio? Is it ok to wait say an hour before eating after doing just cardio?

Re: question on cardio recovery meal?

It's best to have at least a small somehting after any strenuous exercise to prevent muscle catabolism. After weights, you need to start muscle repair, but after cardio, it's more important to prevent muscle wasting. You don't need a whole meal or shake necessarily, but something to get some blood sugar going so your body doesnt start eating up muscle tissue.

Re: question on cardio recovery meal?

I guess it depends on what you're doing afterward and your normal meal timing. Just something small and protein-y if you have a meal coming up within an hour or so. Fruit or nuts or really a small amount of anything will do the trick though. Since I ususally do cardio before breakfast, I just have my meal right after. But as long as whatever it is fits into your calories for the day you should be fine.

Re: question on cardio recovery meal?

OK, well I guess my problem is I have been doing my cardio at 6 am on an empty stomach and then I race home from the gym before my kids wake up so my hubby can get ready for work without worrying about them. I don't have time (due to the kids waking up) to make my usual breakfast right then. I would have to wait about an hour which is why I asked the question about waiting an hour. I suppose I can just eat some quick fruit.
