Can consuming too much protein a day be hard on your kidneys? I weight about 170 and have been consuming around 180-190 grams. About 120 gr of this are from shakes (3 per day). It's been taking me a little longer than usual to go the the bathroom. I drink about 6 8oz glasses of water a day, plus other drinks (diet pop, juice, etc). Maybe it's too much protein, or not enough water, or maybe not enough water in the shakes (I use about 10oz). Thanks.
Too much protein can definitely be hard on the kidneys, but for your stats, that isn't too much protein if you're active and/or working out. However that IS too much to be getting from shakes. Shakes should be used as a supplement to diet, not in place of diet. Like any nutrient, protein is best obtained from real food. Is there a reason you drink so many shakes instead of eating real food?

Actually, what I've read is that too much protein really only becomes an issue if you have a pre-existing kidney condition. But if you do take in a lot of protein, it's important to drink a lot of water and take in more fiber. And it's always better to get your protein from food, not drinks. The body was meant to process food. It was not designed with shakes and bars in mind. And no matter what the protein supplement companies tell you, their protein is not better than real food. It's just more convenient.
