do you have to experience sore muscles

The day after a weight lifting session do you have to experience sore muscles in order to have any growth? Sometimes I don't feel anything after? Does it mean it wasn't a good workout

Not at all. Soreness is much more common in the beginning because your body is so unconditioned. Unless you do a particularly greuling workout (aggressive mass building) or become untrained (weeks off) you don't have to be sore to get benefit. It's not a good gauge for how effective a workout was. Since you're not lifting to gain mass, you don't necessarily ever have to be sore again.

I wasn't to sure about that, thanks for clearing it up, I though that mabie I wasn't doing enough. My friend is always pretty sore after her workout and can hardly sit down, she has also had an increase of over an inch in her thighs so she lifts quite a bit different than I do. I just want to be lean not bigger.

I get sore the day after a chest workout every time even though I have been doing it for a couple of months with regularity. Should i back off the intensity, change my routine, etc..?
