I am not TOO certain. I used to do what I thought was HIIT cardio when I was on trying to lose weight. I think what you're doing is interval training?
The way HIIT was explained to me is like this:
Warm up at a slow pace for a minute or two. Jog for 1 minute, then run for 1 minute, then sprint for 1 min, then you go back to jogging and rinse and repeat. Of course you can modify it to your own level. When I started, I was slow, but it got easier and easier, and I could get to the max speed on my treadmil (a little over 10mph).
