Exercise and weight question

I am 5'4" and weigh about 138. I am a mom of 4 and I homeschool... I am 34 yrs old... I started walking an hour a week ago carrying about 2lbs. in each hand. It is about 4 miles... I also do stretching with my girls. I eat fruit for breakfast (sometimes a bowl of energy cereal), lunch I have 2 pita pockets with turkey or tuna and sometimes baked chips.. Supper- a large salad with chicken or turkey and all the veggie fixins and then before bed some fruit and nut bear naked stuff... I'm not hungry , just not getting the sugar I'm use to... I cut out sugar a week ago as well and I am a big chocolate person... I know I cannot do this forever and I need some advice.. I have tried everything to get these last 10 lbs off.. I am incredibly sore right now from the lungges I have been doing and to top it off, my pants are tighter... Any advice? Is it normal to get bigger before you get smaller?

Re: Exercise and weight question

Congrats on making the change! It's a hard first few steps. It is definitely normal. You're building a little lean muscle mass with the new exercises, which may increase weight a bit initially, but the lean muscle will increase your metabolism and help you to burn fat. Don't sweat it, and if you stick to it, you will surely be pleased with the progress.
As for diet, it looks very healthy and it's unfortunate that you don't think you can stick with it. What you might want to do is to plan a cheat meal once a week. Don't deprive yourself of the things you love totally, but make it a rewarding treat rather than a dietary staple. If you allow yourself an occasional treat, you will be more likely to stick to healthy eating the rest of the time.

Re: Exercise and weight question

Thanks for the encouragement... I don't mean to say I can't stick with healthy eating, I can't stick with salad one meal and pita pockets the next and that is it.. I am too scared to try something else for fear it won't have the same effect. Do you have any other suggestions about that.. Salads are already getting to me..... I can handle the sandwich side of it but the salad is a little tougher.. I have been reading other peoples stories and I hear I should probably not eat after supper? If I need to, what is something good to eat?

Re: Exercise and weight question

Don't be afraid of variety. There are no magic meals that are the "only way" to lose weight. You just have to find other meals that are similar in calorie content and are still satisfying. I'm a huge fan of salads because you get the filling and healthy fiber, nutrient dense vegetables and an overall low calorie meal. I have one salad every day, but I know not everyone can do that. If at all possible, find ways to change it up (you can go mediterranean, mexican, garden, or asian with different ingredients/dressings), or have a smaller salad with something else, ideally protein for some variation. Even if it isn't every day, try to keep it up at least 2 or 3 days a week. Your body will thank you.
Anyway, in lieu of salads, try soup, a small brown rice and chicken dish, Boca burgers, low fat/low cal tuna salad, stir fry, grilled chicken or fish, steamed broccoli/veggies... you really do have a lot of options.
Snacking after dfinner isn't patently bad, but keep in mind that anything your body doesn't burn it will store (typically fat) and at night your metabolsim slows. If you have to snack, try to keep it limited to protein. A hard boiled egg is good, cottage cheese is excellent, sugar free popcicles, sugar free jello, a few nuts, or jerkey would all be okay. Just keep calories to a minimum at night and avoid high GI carbohydrates, and carbs in general if you can help it. Really try not to eat one or two hours before bed.
Hope that's helpful.

Re: Exercise and weight question

Naxis,
Thanks so much for the helpful advice.. Another question if you don't mind?
I am 9 days without sugar and I have continued to walk everyday... Now about the salad thing.. I don't mind eating a salad once every day, it makes me feel like I'm doing something good and also I have a whole lot of energy.. I went from tired all the time to bounds of energy and that is why I'm afraid to change anything... What is a mediteranean salad and all the other salads you listed? All I eat is baby spring lettuces with chicken on top and light done right ranch dressing plus all the other fixings like jalapenos and sometimes cheese and other veggies...
I ate a taco salad today with just lettuce, ground turkey taco meat and cheese...
Should I eat the salad for lunch or supper?
I live in the boonies and we have gardens and I'm a big lover of cooking... What do you think about peas and beans and butterbeans and all the other garden stuff? Thanks! :
