You don't need to go to a pro running shop to get an excellent running shoe. (The worst pair of running shoes I ever had came from a Runners Roost and cost 120 bucks). They just cost more. Sauconys are my favorite running/training shoe, but New Balance also has some great ones. Nike is pretty popular, but I think they're inferior, personally. Try a sporting goods type store, or a general athletic shoe/clothing type shop like an Athlete's Foot. Try a few different pairs on and compare how they feel. Different styles feel different, so don't disregard all of one brand if one kind doesn't feel right. Look at the running shoes as well as cross trainers. Both will suit your needs. Hope that helps. Good luck.
