Can exercise really help....

me, if I lose 50 lbs and exercise 5 days a week doing stregnth training will I still have a lot of flab? I guess what I am asking is whether you exercise your butt off if you lose 50 lbs will you still have a flabby stomach no matter what? Will I need a tummy tuck?

Re: Can exercise really help....

It is heavily dependent on genetics and your personal situation. I'm guessing by your nickname that you have had a few kids. That, for many women, can lead to a flabby belly because of skin and muscle stretching, and unlike supermodels, they just don't have the genetics to "snap back".
However, if you allow some time for your body to adjust to your new weight, you may well be able to have a tight midsection again. It's not unheard of, but everyone is different. You will just have to see how your body responds. Just please consider surgery an absolute last resort.

In most situations cosmetic surgery should indeed be the last resort. However, in cases where the abdominal muscle is torn (happens quite often due to pregnancies) and the skin is stretched beyond its ability to snap back (depends a lot on genetics, age, etc) then plastic surgery (tummy tuck) is the ONLY resort if one wants to improve that area.
First of all, the extra weight has to go. At the same time do cardio and strength training. See what happens. If you are lucky and your tummy's skin does tighten up sufficiently, then it's great and you don't need to take other, more drastic steps. If, on the other hand, despite losing the weight and working out, the area is still loose and flabby (with extra skin) then plastic surgery is the only solution to that problem. OR, you could simply accept things as they are and be happy to be healthy with three beautiful children to show for all your hard work. That also works, so to each, his own.

Re: Can exercise really help....

I had a one cesarean in my life--my only time I gave birth. And in order to keep my belly reasonably flat, I have to watch what I eat and do many crunches. Don't ask how many--sometimes I lose track!

There are things that exacerbate a flabby belly, though. Poor posture, sitting for prolonged periods of time without keeping tummy pulled in, constipation and gas/bloating, too. Supposedly stress does its thing, too, in making one gain belly fat.

But would I have rather had a flatter tummy and never given birth than had my cesarean? Never in a million years. My granddaughter likes my soft curves to cuddle on, too.

I don't know about a tummy tuck. I have my doubts about cosmetic surgery that involves cutting and just the anesthesia alone. I'd try everything else first--and have fun doing so. Like exercising to my fav music or including kiddies in on it.
