Just to further expound, if you lift everyday (same muscle groups), you're not allowing your muscles enough time to recover and muscle growth occurs *during recovery*, not in the gym. So use a split if you want to lift several days in a row, but like MaxOT said, allow a couple non lifting days each week to let the muscles repair.
