cardio is submaximal exercise performed rhythmically so to speak (like running, walking, swimming, cycling, rowing, etc) that can be sustained for a given length of time (typically 20 min or longer is recommended)and raises the heart rate significantly from rest.
You can raise your heart rate during weight lifting, but this is not sustained for a long period of time and most weight lifting is performed with a relatively small muscle mass (emphasis on relative here). When you do cardio, it is best to do an exercise that requires as least both your legs in order to gain the most benefits and burn the greatest number of calories
