I was told to start out by walking everyday .. not to run right away. To walk for a week then jog for a week, then walk for a week then run for a week. And Alternate. I don't know though, Just what I was told.

running IS agreat way to loose weight and get fantastic legs too! runner's world mag is a ton of info for beginner programs too. i think they are also online...I don't think i'd recommend the week on week off one -I've been running( jogging really)for years and have never heard of anything like that. Many beginner programs incorporate running and walking to the same workout though.

Be sure to get really good RUNNING shoes though

happy trails

Cyn

The running/jogging theory may be just to build stamina and possibly to prevent "shin splints", but if you can do it, running is an excellent cardio exercise (many argue the best). There are a lot of interval programs that purport to be extremely effective in fat loss (inverval == walk 1 minute, jog 2 minutes, run/sprint 2 minutes... etc). I actually much prefer the interval method primarily because I don't get bored. 1 and 2 minute goals for each interval is much easier to keep in sight than 40 minutes straight at one pace.

I would not run everyday. Your body needs time to recover from the previous run. I tried it once and foundout that my body gets real fatigued by the end of the week and have no energy. I changed to every other day and felt so much better. You can do other things when you don't run such as elliptical machines and other machines but I would not run everyday. Mixing it up is better anyways to keep your body guessing so you don't adapt to your workout.
