Most often, when I do HIIT I do 3 minute sessions divided into 1 minute intervals:
1 min fast walk
1 min run
1 minute sprint
(or the equivelant if on an elip machine)
I repeat for 15 to 30 minutes.
30 seconds doesnt seem like enough time to get the heart rate where it should be for "sprints". But maybe that's just me. At the end of 1 minute going full on, my legs are burning and shaking. I used to try for 2 minutes sprinting, but I didn't put in full effort since I knew I had a longer timeframe to maintain. The walking and running portion is just enough time to recover and catch my breath.
