Impossible to say what it's from as I have no idea what you are doing at the gym that would effect the knee. It's common that people have knees that are somewhat out of a alignment and as a person gets older you get that "bone on bone" thing going on in th knee joint and that causes knee pain. Go see a doctor. Your family physician can refer you to someone decent. I do get knee pain, mine radiates up my quad. Mine is due to my knee being out of alignment which is a common problem. There are exercises and stretches to strengthen other ligaments in the knee to help with this if that is your problem.
