Bad Knee Pain - surgery???

Hi folks, first time poster here. I have a pretty bad knee injury. Basically, about 7-8months ago, after doing a set of leg presses, i noticed that my knee hurts a bit when I put pretty on it (ie, squatting, climbing stairs, etc). So I stopped with the leg presses for a while, then resumed after 2 months. After my excercise, same thing happened so I stopped again. So I stopped for 4 months, and I thought it would heal. So I did tried leg presses again. Now it time, after the excercise, it was pretty bad. I can still walk no problem, but I can't apply any pressure on the knee. When I squat or climb stairs I feel a sharp and pretty bad pain in my knee. It feels like my knee joints aren't properly connected, or it's grinding against a tendon/ligament/muscle or something. Kinda hard to explain. When I put my ear up close, I can hear cracking sounds. I think I must've torn something pretty bad, like a ligament or ACL or something.

So what should I do? Do I need surgery? How long would that take to recover? Would I be able to fully work out my leg in the future (apply pressure, squats, leg presses)?

Thanks!

How old are you? I had a osgood schlatter [removed] and it was a similiar problem to what you are describing. Its not really a big deal, but it can be annoying. Swimming is a pretty good exercise with it to keep your legs in shape. (and it can persist for a long time mine lasted for a couple of years before I could even squat again lol).

Hi, I am pretty old, about 30. So I don't think it's osgood schlatter since that's only for young kids right?

Re: Bad Knee Pain - surgery???

I have the same problem with my knee 2 yrs ago. It hurt when climbing stairs, squatting etc. I went to see 2 orthopedics, one suggested surgery and the other just to wait and see. I didn't get the surgery, but limited my exercise, avoid stairs, massage, ice, knee supports, and the pain went away gradually and I was fine in a year. Even though I am fine now, I try to avoid climbing stairs if I could and not doing squatting exercise. Leg press is out for me. Eliptical machine is great.

But you are a lot younger than I am, so go see an orthopedic and if he recomend you for a surgery, you might want to consider it, so you can enjoy your young life and do any exercise that you like. I heard when you are still young, you will heal faster. I know some people at the gym around your age that had surgery and happy with it and I know a person that is in my age and the surgery didn't help her. Hope you feel better soon.

I was told that I have meniscus tear.
I forgot the name of the surgery, I think something that start with a letter A.

Be patient, it takes time. You need to rest it just like your chiro said.
Wear the knee brace and don't climb stairs. When I don't have a choice, this is what I do:
When going up the stairs I lift the leg that doesn't hurt first, then lift the injured leg to the same level and so on. When going down I do the opposite, with the injured leg first.

Thanks Lynn. I have inflammation in the knee muscles due to lack of fluid and cartilage damage. Is that what Meniscal tear is?

My chiro just told me to not apply pressure on the knee (no stairs, no working out legs), wear a brace, take glucosamine, and ice knee regularly. However they said sugery was not needed. I hope they're right.

I'm gonna do that for a while and see what happens.

Re: Bad Knee Pain - surgery???

I can relate to the "crackling" knee....when I walk up stairs it sounds like bags rustling, knee swells if I am on it for too long or walking to much, running is outta the question. I too have been around the block with drs, specialists, mri, etc and the concensus is that it is the beginning of arthritis, I should be doing certain leg exercises with weights, not soo much presses but weights, ice regularly.....and live with it. It sucks cause I am only 44 and feel older with this stupid knee, but such is life..I chew on glucosamine everyday and hope to see an improvement by nov....
