Can heavy lifting stunt your growth?

I was wondering if heavy lifting can stunt your growth? I asked a friend if it can and he said no, I think it can though. I'm talking about doing heavy squats, dead lifts etc. Those heavy back exercises that are hard on the back and spine. Can they stunt your growth? Thanks.

Re: Can heavy lifting stunt your growth?

I think providing your technique is correct and the weight is achievable for you, then no it won't stunt your growth. As far as I know there is little/no scientific evidence that weight training can stunt growth.

Re: Can heavy lifting stunt your growth?

Junior77,

Lots of things that my teachers taught me in school turned out to be false -- or at least exaggerated. Keep in mind that they are trying to keep a bunch of impulsive kids, with no experience at life or consequences, from going whole-hog into something and injuring themselves. Kids are known for thinking that "if a little is good, a whoooole lot must be better", and "I feel fine doing this, so none of those scary consequences will happen to me if I overdo it". So teachers (parents too!) sometimes go a bit overboard on telling you why you should avoid something. Once you are old enough to learn moderation, you can see that lots of things you were told were exaggerations. The important thing here is moderation.
