Coffee and weights?

Does drinking coffee before engaging in an intensive session of weights improve or deteriorate the quality of the workout? I have heard and read mixed things, on the one hand, that it gives you more energy and allows you to lift more and feel less fatigue, and on the other hand, that its diuretic qualities are bad for a workout, and that coffee contains chemicals that delay the repair of the muscle tissues. Which is more correct? I have been working out regularly for years and am in pretty good shape, except for about the past year I had become addicted to coffee. Fortunately, I have kicked that habit and barely touch it now, yet would be tempted to drink some unsweetened, sans cream before working out, if it helped to lift more or to burn more fat overall. Thanks.

There are "experts" on both sides of the fence with "evidence" to back up their claims. Coffee gets villified, mostly as an addictive drink that in large quantities over time may hurt training and health, but Robert Haas (nutrition consultant of many athletes) thinks it is important to include for its energy and antioxidants. I think the so called evidence is sparse and ultimately inconclusive. I seriously doubt the occasional cup of coffee will have any adverse effects on health or training, though.

I don't think either way will make a huge difference as long as you don't overdo it. Of course, like stated, there is evidence on both sides and everybody has their own opinions. I think MOST things are okay in moderation so if I have the occasional cup of coffee I don't worry about it. I love to have a cup of coffee or energy drink to give me more energy if I'm feeling very slow. I also really like green tea and it does the trick as well.
