Calories burned in yoga compared to other forms of excercise?

How long to would you say that would a person have to do yoga (either vinayasa, or ashtanga or any heavy, higher intensity/experinced) forms of yoga for to equal the amount of calories burned in 1 hour of other forms of excercise like weights, intervals, or cardio? I am wondering because I really love the way yoga makes me feel and I love doing it! But I am concerned with keeping my current body weight and physique.

Thanks for all your help!

Re: Calories burned in yoga compared to other forms of excercise?

I just started Yoga myself and like it too. A friend of mine lost a bunch of inches and really toned up and Yoga was the only thing she was doing. From what I read you can burn 170 to 500 cal per hour depending on the type of Yoga. I still do cardio classes also but am trying to get the Yoga in twice a week.

Have you noticed any changes yet?

Goodness I hope its 500 haha. I do ashtanga. Its my favorite kind. What kind of classes are you taking? I haven't noticed any more inches lost or anything like that but I do notice I am more flexible and of course more calm after class. Have you noticed any changes? How many times do you practice a week?

Thanks

Re: Calories burned in yoga compared to other forms of excercise?

I just started a couple weeks ago so I have only taken 3 PiYo classes so far which is Pilates & Yoga combined. I am taking an hour of just the Yoga today after work. They also have just the Yoga on the weekends too so I am going to try to make it on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I'm going to try for at least 2 or 3 per week and see how that goes. I can definitely feel the burn when I do the PiYo. It's not as easy as I thought it would be. How long have you been doing it?

Oh and what is the Ashtanga yoga? I have no idea what the one is they have at the gym. Just says Yoga on the sheet.
