Macular degeneration?

I have a question or two about macular degeneration. An optometrist told me several days ago that I show the beginnings of it in both eyes. She's referred me to a specialist. In the mean time, I've been told to increase my prednisilone eye drops from once per eye nightly to once per eye every two hours.

I'd like to know your experiences with macular degeneration and if you have any other eye problems that might have contributed to it or to which it has contributed. Retinal detachments are a surgical risk for my eyes, regardless. Any other risks?

I'm male, 62 and have had quite a few eye surgeries. Cataract removals, scleral buckles in both eyes secondary to the cataract surgeries, vitrectomy in my right eye (the buckle surgery failed), bilateral corneal transplants due to Fuchs Syndrome(my siblings also have Fuchs), and two lens detachments in my right eye.

I also have apnea, epilepsy, CMT, and the usual hypertension, GERD, BPH, that so many others have. Any and all comments are welcome.

thanks

Re: Macular degeneration?

You can check out supplements for macular issues and eye health. They should include lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, fish oil and others.
My opthamologist recommended Bausch andLomb preservision which I have been using for several years along with other supplements. It really makes a difference over time.Check out the various formulas online.

Re: Macular degeneration?

I have myopic macular degneration. It's similar to the wet type of age related MD. My nearsightedness caused my retina (just the left eye) to stretch which caused bleeding but has been stable for over 10 years now. Most cases of macular degneration is age-related and is the dry type. As the previous poster stated start taking eye vitamin supplements and check your eyes with an Amsler grid. You mentioned CMT. Are you referring to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder? I also have that. In rare cases it can affect your eyes and cause atrophy of the optic nerve. My retina specialist assured me my vision problem was related to my nearsightedness and not CMT. Make sure you tell your eye doctor about the CMT.

Yes, it's Charcot-Marie-Tooth. Small world, eh?

My macular problem is either age-related or a result of my mother taking prescription drugs for morning sickness.

My CMT is Type1 and is probably due to those drugs. There's no history of it my family. I see the surgeon this Friday and see what he recommends if, in fact, he agrees with the diagnosis.
