what causes eye blood vessels breaking? - Eye & Vision Message Board

one of mines recently broke out of the blue, so i wanted to know why this kind of stuff happens! im sure nothing got into my eye..help!

Well I know one reason that a blood vessel in the eye could break is if you hold your nose while you sneeze. But don't worry, it will heal on its own regardless of how it happened.

Two other reasons could be. Inadvertently rubbing the eye or hyptertension. A cold wash clothe 2-4xs/day for two to four minutes for the first day then a real warm one not hot enough to burn but very warm for the second day 3-4x/day until rednes goes away. Takes about 3-10 days. If it happens more than twice/year see eyecare professional. There are a few other reasons if someone wants to elaborate.

I had this in November and went to the doctor. He said it should go away in 14 days. When it didn't, I went back and he ran a ton of blood tests to see if I had some kind of other problem (hypertension, liver problems,diabetes,etc) that would cause this. $119 later (my portion of the bill), the tests all came back normal, so the next step was a biopsy of my eye. I said no way. After two months it went slowly away on its own.

I do not remember rubbing my eye, but don't worry about it if it lasts awhile. My doctor said that 90% of the time they have no idea what caused it.
