Substance abuse can cause blood shot eyes, also stress on your eyeballs and vomitting.
I believe old age and lack of sleep does, as well. Along with dry eyes... Heck even from wearing contact lens or from the chlorine in a swimming pool. There can be many causes.
You can try to treat with with artificial tears, like Visine or something, if they 'sting.'
