Dry Eyes and Swelling?

I was just wondering...does anyone know whether dry eyes can lead to eye swelling or changes in the appearance (color, etc) or your lids? thanks for your help.

Re: Dry Eyes and Swelling?

Yes, very definitely dry eyes can swell and distort the way you look. Dry eyes caused my eyes to swell and I looked so strange, one eye swollen more than the other. Was in to see internist and first thing he asked was "what's different about you"? Later I looked in the mirror and knew exactly what he was seeing. Saw eye doctor later and he said "yes" dry eyes had caused the swelling.

Please, get busy and find the proper treatment for your dry eyes. My eyes are returning to more normal looking now. I started the Restasis eye drops and they are working for me. I was using eye drops every hour, now need to use them about 4 times day.

Re: Dry Eyes and Swelling?

Thanks for your reply. do you have severe dry eyes? I asked a few doctors and they don't think dry eyes can cause swelling, except in very extreme cases. thanks.

Re: Dry Eyes and Swelling?

Yes, I have severe dry eyes. The Restasis seems to be working, helps eyes produce tears.

My internist did not seem to be aware of dry eyes causing swelling but my opthamologist said it does. He should know since eyes are his speciality.

In the last few days with more tears, my eyes appear to be more open, less fatty looking around the eyes if you know what I mean.

Be sure and keep eyes moist, eyedrops every hour if necessary to prevent the cornea from getting scratched.

Refresh Liquidgel is a good one to use, Systane is another, Refresh Plus is good if you do not need a thicker drop. Refresh PM ointment is good at night. There are other good ones I am sure, these are the ones my opthamologist suggested I use.

Re: Dry Eyes and Swelling?

Yes, I battled Blepharitis for 1 1/2 years but it is now clear, just recently. Still do hot soaks and eyelid scrubs to keep blepharitis from returning.

Have had a problem with dry eyes for many years, but, they got worse in the last couple years.

Swelling came about gradually, eyes had the sick look but did not notice it was actually a swelling. Over time swelling got worse. Thought I had gained weight in face for awhile. Later realized my eyes were swollen and the eye doctor confirmed it.

Eyes got to where they looked like they were smaller or not open as much as before. I was getting tired of the "sick eye look", but now they are beginning to look better and more open. My eyes had always sparkled and talked for me, if you know what I mean. People noticed my eyes first. Now eyes are drab and do not sparkle, getting a little better lately.

Since the Restasis started working my eyes appear to me more open, brighter and not so much the sick eye look.

The sick eye look has aged me in the face big time. Sure hope it clears up and I look like what I think I looked like before this happened.

My eyes began to have the puffy look around them gradually but yet not the swelled look you normally would expect to see. Difficult to explain.
