Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi

Can anyone help me find an eye ointment or gel that doesn't irritate my eye at night? I have been trying lacrilube for the last two nights and this has caused my eyes to become more swollen then before. Lacrilube contains parrifin and wool fat. It is kind of like petroleum jelly.

Whats the best ointment that you have used for dry eyes? I have dry eyes and blepharitis and can't seem to find any relief at night.

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Chapster,

I am also suffering from dry eyes. Mine are from my lasik surgery that I had about 5 months ago. I tried using the nightime ointments, but like you said, I found that they irritated my eyes. I was mostly using the Refresh PM. More than one doctor suggested to me that I try using GenTeal Gel instead. I tried it a few nights and it seemed to work OK; however, it did disappear during the night unlike the ointment which was usually still in my eyes in the morning. So if your eyes are VERY dry at night, it might not be the best thing. I am currently not using anything at night, since I find that is not when my symptoms are at their worst. However, I just thought I would suggest the GenTeal gel, since many docs have recommended it to me as an alternative to the ointments at night. Good luck!

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi sdv

Thanks for the help. Does Genteal have preservatives in? My eyes are extremely dry at night. By about 9pm I can't open my eyes as they feel like sand paper. I have to constantly put cellufresh eye drops in as cellufresh is the only eye drop I have ever been able to tolerate. The only problem is they last about 2 minues before my eyes are dry again.

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Chapster,

I'm really sorry to hear that you have such bad problems at night. I think that most of the GenTeal products, including the gel, have a dissolving preservative. It says that it is preservative free once it hits your eye, so I think it is safe even if you are sensitive to preservatives. The only thing I would be concerned about with the gel is that it is not as thick as the ointment so it might not last all night. Have you ever tried moisture googles at nighttime? I've heard that it is helpful for some people to sleep in them at night to keep the moisture in. The only other thing that I can think of that I do is using a humidifier right next to my bed at night. I hope that you find something to help you out!

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi svd

Thanks for the help. I have tried tranquileyes goggles. I tried them for one night as when I woke up with them my eyes were blood red and were sore for the rest of the day. I think the water inside them might of irritated my eyes. I have also tried sleeping with a humidifier next to my head which didn't help very much. What type of humidifier do you use? Mine is the steam version and it tends to smell a bit funny.

I think I am going to wait for the weekend before I try Genteal as my eyes are just recovering from the burning due to lacrilube. Its also easier to sleep if the gel hurts my eyes then having to go to work the next day.

Regards,
1chapster1

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Chapster,

I just use a warm mist humidifier. I don't notice any smell from it though. I'm not sure if it helps me or not. I think that it helps alot for people who keep their eyes open slightly when they sleep, but I think I am lucky and actually close them all the way. I can't seem to find a real pattern to my dryness, but I don't have major problems when sleeping. If anything I'd say they are probably a little worse at night just because I've been using my eyes all day.

I hope that the GenTeal gel works for you. Have you tried any other ointments, or just the one you are currently using now? I had tried Refresh PM and Moisture Eyes, but they both were pretty much the same...kind of like vaseline. My doc said that not everyone's eyes will react well to that kind of an ointment, and that is why he suggested the GenTeal gel. Good luck!

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Chapster -

I'd have to second the suggestion to use Genteal Gel. The only thing I'd add is that you have to make sure it's the "severe" version of Genteal Gel (the "mild" and "moderate" versions are just drops). I've been using it for about 5 years now. Sometimes it doesn't last through the night, but usually it does when I put enough in. It's the only thing that has worked for me. "waxy" lubricants like Lacrilube are not very good for dry eyes, in my opinion.

Good luck,
ebmd

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Chapster!

My eyes are very dry at night due to the lasik surgery I had a little over four months ago. Not fun! I think that I actually sleep with my eyes open a little bit at night which makes them worse.

At night I use Moisture Eyes PM. It is a thick lubricant ointment, like the Lacrilube, except it doesn't have a preservative. The preservative in the Lacrilube may be what has irritated your eyes. I really like the Moisture Eyes PM and I've been using it every night for several months. The gels just don't seem to work for me.

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Chapster1:

I have Dry Eyes and Recurrent Corneal Erosion which I've had for over 2 years and it's finally starting to get a lot better. I've tried all kinds of drops and ointments. Since each person is different, you have to keep trying the one that works for you. I like AKWA Tears ointment. It's pretty reasonable if you get it online or get it at Walmart. I buy it at work, only costs me $1.70 per tube. I've been using it for years. I also use Bausch & Lomb Moisture Eyes Ointment as an alternative.

If you eyes are extremely dry, you might to ask your Eye Doc about Restasis. You need a prescription for that.

Good Luck,

Anninalbany

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi All

Many thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately many of these ointments are unavailable to me as I live in Sydney Australia. I do find however that there are similar products here or even the same products under a different name. I picked up some eye gel called viscotears a few days ago. Has anyone tried these before? Are they any good? Today I am having an extremely bad eye day and my eyes seem very dry and swollen. I have been on doxycycline 50mg for the last 2 months which don't seem to be working yet. I have also tried everything from warm compresses to restasis to goggles. I am kind of running out of options but have to find something that provides relief as my eye are becoming worse on a monthly basis. I think if I can find some ointment or drops that help with the dryness then it will make things a lot better - I hope.

Thanks

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Chapster,

I'm sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with your eyes. Sorry to hear that you cannot get some of the dry eye treatment stuff over in Austrailia.

I wish I had some more suggestions, but I'm new to this whole dry eye thing, and I really can't say that I have found something that works incredibly well for me. I'm trying a bunch of different stuff, but my dryness fluctuates alot, so I never know what is working and what isn't! One thing that I do not remember you mentioning is any supplements that you might be taking. I'm currently taking flax seed oil and a supplement called HydroEye. Not sure if you could get HydroEye in Australia, but I imagine that flax seed oil is available anywhere. It is supposed to help with the oil layer of your tears I believe. Also, you mentioned warm compresses, but do you ever do eye lid scrubs to treat your blepharitis? My doc told me to start doing those after my warm compresses.

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Michelle

Thanks for the advice. I used to live in South Africa and they used to sell HydroEye there. Unfortunately I can't get it here but I think I will get some flaxseed oil tonight. Do you think these tablets are helping your dry eyes? I have tried the eyelid scrubs after the warm compresses. They seem to irritate my eyes quite a lot. I think I have extremely sensitive eyes as everything I put in them makes them worse.

I have had dry eyes for about 15 years but in the last 2 years I have developed blepharitis as well as GPC. I wear contact lenses as they seem to protect my eyes from the wind and help them from drying out.

I am sorry to hear that you have dry eyes as I know what it feels like. Sorry that I can't offer any advice as I just have not found anything that helps at all. I have been to 4 eye specialists and I think they have all just given up on my eyes.

Thanks,
1chapster1

Re: Whats the best eye ointment or gel for dry eyes?

Hi Chapster,

I'm so sorry that you have had this problem for so long. I wish that you could find a really good doctor that could help you out. I've had alot of problems with the docs I've seen too. Some of them just don't seem to care! Sometimes I feel that the lid scrubs irritate my eyes too, but I still do them because I really want to get the blepharitis under control. I've only been doing them for about 3 weeks now, but I am going to try to get alot more details about the blepharitis from my doc when I see him in 2 weeks.

About the flax seed oil...try to find the actual liquid kind. I've heard that it takes 14 of the gel caps to equal one tablespoon of the actual liquid kind. I found mine in an organic grocery store. It was in the refrigerated section. You are supposed to keep it refrigerated so that it doesn't go bad.

I can't really say for sure if the flax seed oil or the HydroEye is helping me though. My dryness is due to my lasik surgery which was about 5 months ago. It is very common to have dry eyes after this procedure, just not to the extent or for the length of time that I have had them. Some days they feel fine, some days they feel awful, so I can never really tell if what I'm doing works or not. My doc tells me that they can fluctuate alot during healing and said it could take up to a year for them to get back to normal, so hopefully he is right and someday they will feel better.

What is GPC? Also, I was surprised to hear that you wear contact lenses. Are these just regular contact lenses for vision correction or are they actually something special to help with the dryness? I had alot of problems with my contacts before my surgery, and I think that it meant that I already had mildly dry eyes. I wish the doctors would have caught this before they operated on me. Apparently dry eyes before the surgery increases your chances of having worse dry eyes afterward.

Too bad there is not a quick fix for all these problems. I am glad that I found these boards though. I have gotten some good tips on things to try, and it is always nice to get a little support from people that understand what you are going through with your eyes. I hope that you are having a good day!

Michelle
