Eye damage? Very worried please help

Hello

On thursday night i was hit in the right eye with a football. The ball was struck very powerfully and for about 30 minutes afterwards i could not see out of the affected eye. My vision slowly came back but i have a black eye and the white of my eye is red and the eye is very sore. My vision is blurred and my eye is sensitive to light. I went to my GP and then to A&E, the doc's looked into my eye and at the back of my eye - they said there are no abrasions on the front of my eye or any damage inside my eye, but they have put me on 2 lots of drops for inflammation:

1) Prednisolone acetate (pred forte)
2) Cyclopentolate Hydrochloride (mydrilate)

I have to go back next week for another check, but i am worried now because the pupil in the affected eye does not respond to light - its permanently dilated and my vision in the eye is constantly badly blurred. I am very worried that my eye could be damaged - but i just wanted to check if any of those eye drops can cause this side effect - a dilated pupil that doesnt repsond to light, and blurred vision?? It would be a load off my mind if someone could tell me that this is due to the drops.

any help would be fantastic.

regards Jon

Hi - the cyclopentolate Hydrochloride works by dilating the pupil so I wouldnt worry too much at the moment. It should return to normal when you stop the drops.

It sounds like they're treating you for a traumatic iritis. Basically the cyclopentolate will dilate you to make you less light sensitive. The pred forte is a steroid used to keep down any inflammation that might have developed.

Less light sensitive? I thought that if your pupil dilates (goes larger) it allows more light in, so that would cause more sensitivity to light?

What is traumatic iritis? Is it serious

Should i continue with the drops? I hate using them as they blur my vision even more and its so uncomfortable having one eye blurred all the time. It gives me a headache. The doctor said i should use 1 drop of the pred forte every 2 hours for the first 5 days then 1 drop 6 times a day for another 5 days. He also said i should use the mydrilate 1 drop 4 times a day for a week. Are these dosages OK? I read the leaflets and it says 2 to 4 times a day on average for the pred forte? Am a little worried i may be using too much? I also get a tangy taste in my throat shortly after i use the drops - not very nice!!!! Is this because the eyes and throat are all connected?

I'm still worried about my pupil not being able to dilate and constrict - is this also usual in traumatic iritis?

Sorry for all the questions but the doctor didn't really say much to me :-(

Jon, from what the other posters said, those drops keep your eye dilated, so it's not going to respond to light. I didn't know there was such a thing as traumatic iritis, but my daughter had iritis and had to keep her pupil dilated because the inflammation causes the pupil to stick to the lens. Iritis is inflammation of the front part of the eye. Just do what the doctor tells you and you'll be ok.
And yes, the tear ducts are connected to the nose and the nose to the throat.
