Cannot open eyelids in early morning

This seems like a weird problem. I've talked to 2 doctors about it and they both kind of shrugged. For a while now, when first I wake up (sometimes worse than others) I cannot easily open my eyelids. They don't seem to want to open on their own. If I open them with my fingers, then they seem to work ok after that. They aren't glued shut with foreign matter or anything, they seem healthy in other ways except for allergy symptoms, like itching when my allergies flare up. I don't have the drooping eyelids that some people get surgery for, either.

Does anyone know what might cause this?

Re: Cannot open eyelids in early morning

Could be early signs of blepharitis. Mine started with my eyelids stuck in the morning. Then, I could eventually open them. Sometime later, I got blepharitis. Might be a good idea to start doing warm compresses once a day. I wish I had, as I feel it might have helped.

Thanks casinogal, I'll have to find out more about blepharitis and find out about warm compresses. One more question: were they stuck because of crusts or goo or anything like that, or did it just feel like the muscles didn't work?

Re: Cannot open eyelids in early morning

There was nothing there. I would wake up and couldn't open my eyes. Eventually, they would open. I don't have that problem now, but I still have blepharitis and have to do the compresses every day, also drops.

Re: Cannot open eyelids in early morning

I had this same problem about a year ago and it was the starting of dry eyes.So i now use eye ointment before going to bed and that seems to help.

Re: Cannot open eyelids in early morning

I have had dry eyes for years and it didn't really bother me other than my contacts getting dry and annoying at times. Over the past few years I have had difficulty pulling them open. My left eye, which was diagnosed as "dry eye" can sometime feel like it's being scraped if I try to force it open without the help of my fingers. Be careful if this happens to you, if you scrape your cornea it'll hurt like heck! I now use Refresh drops (since I injured the right eye last summer). They are great to get your eyes lubricated and don't burn or sting.

Re: Cannot open eyelids in early morning

I had the same problem , my right eyelid was the worse. I could open the left without help. Eye doctor wasn't sure of the cause. Sent me to neurologist who wanted to put me through a series of tests. I just kept using eye drops day and night, skipped the tests, and so far no more problems.

People with dry eye often cant open there eyes in the morning as you dont blink when you are asleep and blinking produces the tears. If your eyes are only mildly dry (i.e dry when you wear contacts) now i would ask your doc for restasis rather than waiting for the dry eye to get worse as you get older, becuase it will be harder to treat then.

Re: Cannot open eyelids in early morning

If you go with the over-the-counter eyedrops for dry eyes, try a gel one first, as opposed to a regular liquid eyedrop. The gel eyedrops last longer on your eye and seem to work better than liquid for dry eyes, I've found.
