Sounds like you had accomodative esotropia as a child. The effort of focusing up close caused your eye to turn in. The glasses lessened the amount of work your eyes had to do and stopped the inward turn. Do I sound like a doctor yet? A lot of medium and close work is putting a strain on your (old) eyes again. I'd say wear whatever glasses you need to relieve the pressure. Don't quote me on this, but I think glasses for this problem are slightly under-correcting so your eyes won't get worse.
Are you familiar with the AAPOS site? http://med-aapos.bu.edu/publicinfo/publicinfo.html
It taught me everything I know, ha, ha. The site is for pediatric opthalmology and adult strabismus. I've read about little kids wearing bifocals, so progrssives aren't that unusual. If you want to do a search on that site, follow these instructions - the search engine is crabby. Open any post, go right to the bottom to HERE, then down a couple paragraphs to Search Engine. Type in your keywords and hit the submit button, not enter.
