Contacts/Astigmatism ? - Eye & Vision Message Board

I'm considering getting contacts. I've got Astigmatism and am wondering what type is the best and can you see pretty clearly. What would be considered a severe astigmatism when you shouldn't where them?

I've also been told that if you have dry eyes you shouldn't where them, is that true?

There's a pretty big range of contacts available for people with astigmatism. You can either go with soft or rigid lenses (rigid may provide better vision though). The lenses that correct astigmatism go up to a relatively high number so you probably won't have to worry about your astigmatism being too 'severe'.

Regarding dry eyes... it really depends on the severity. You can adminster some rewetting drops more frequently or can get "punctal plugs" if your dry eye is more severe. Those allow the tearm to stay in your eye longer by blocking the drainage route the tears usually take.

Toric lenses (contacts for astigmatism) are a little bigger than normal contacts and thus take a little more time getting use to. I have worn both Focus Toric and Acuvue Toric. I really liked the Acuvue...they felt much less thick and they are only worn for ~2 weeks where as Focus are worn for ~1 month.
