As far as I know, the tear DUCTS are what drain the tears from the eyes. It is the tear GLANDS that produce the tears. All 4 of my tear ducts are permanently closed and I still produce tears. He could have some kind of infection or blockage. At least, this is what I think. I am not a dr, so I could be totally wrong. Has he been seeing an ophthalmologist? That is very important. He might need some type of anti-biotic drop. How long has this been going on for?
Also tell him that if he is not producing any of his own tears, he needs to make sure that he keeps his eyes extremely lubricated by using plenty of preservative free artificial tears during the day, and a preservative free tears ointment at bedtime. Has he had any other eye problems as a result of his lack of tears? Also, it is much more common in females but it is also possible for men to have sjogrens syndrome, an immunological disorder that attacks the moisture producing glands in the body. That's what I have. It can be detected with a simple blood test.
