Corneal Transplants - Eye & Vision Message Board

Hi everybody,
I have to go for a corneal transplant within the next couple of months or so. I would like to know if anybody can explain to me about their experiences, and what they went through. Thank you in advance.

How old are you? My husband is 30 and has been on the waithing list for a cornia for 16 months now. Getting frustrated because he has to were a contact lense to smooth out the blisters that have formed on his eyes.

My husband has had corneal transplants in both eyes. Generally, it's not a bad procedure. Of course, my hubby had THE best eye surgeon in the state, so that really helps. He had the first surgery in 2001, and all went well except for the very first day his eye pressure went WAY up and he was in a lot of pain for a few hours. But once that went down, he was fine. Just make sure you follow the doctor's orders to the letter and stay within your weight restrictions. Generally for 3 or 4 months you will not be able to lift anything over about 20 lbs. or do ANYTHING that would make you strain.

I would really think about it long and hard. I had a corneal transplant and after about three years it looks like it's being rejected and the chances of another transplant not being rejected increase each time it's attempted. It's a long road and a life long commitment. Now I wish I hadn't done it and just lived with my eye the way it was with the decreased vision. Good Luck
