blind spots

My son attends school out of state; he called today and said he has blind spots in his right eye. If he closes his left eye he said he can't hardly see anything. He said that they started about a week ago and seem to be getting worse and causing some headaches. I asked him if he had any floaters or flashes and he said "yes". The funny thing is, when he was very young, he had a macular solar burn that caused a lind spot in his central vision. They opthamologist we saw said that there was nothing they could do for that and the blind spot would probably go away, which it did. Is this related? My son plays college basketball and they are on the road this weekend; I made him an appt with an opthamologist but not until Tuesday, should he be seen sooner? Do any of these symptoms sound familar to anybody?

Re: blind spots

Since this is affecting one eye only, which rules out standard migraine, it's my opinion it should be seen to as soon as possible. It could be a retinal tear or detachment, among other things. I'd advise him to go to ER where a doc can at least look in his eye. That will either lead to treatment, a referral, or put his mind (and yours) at rest that it's nothing serious.
