Re: how to find the best opthomologist

Impossible question to answer! It depends on the nature of the problem. Individual ophthalmologists tend to specialise in particular aspects of a very complex subject so you first need to get a good diagnosis. Once you have that, you can ask directly who deals with that type of problem in your area. If you're lucky, you may find a good one but it is essentially a matter of luck.
The place to start is an eye hospital or a hospital that has an ophthalmology department.

Re: how to find the best opthomologist

If you live in a large metropolitan area of the USA, you could use the Castle-Connelly directory of "top doctors." (It is available online for a nominal fee.) All of the doctors listed are board-certified in their specialty and have been nominated by other doctors as someone they would want to see for their own health care. The directory provides information about the doctor's education, training, practice, and special interests (e.g., vitreoretinal surgery, cataract/IOL, etc.) I've had very good experiences with Castle-Connolly doctors. Unfortunately, the majority of their doctors practice in large cities (e.g., New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco).

Sorry about the misspelling--it's the Castle-Connolly directory of best American doctors that I was referring to. Vfpierot, since you're in NYC, this source can provide you with an extensive listing of excellent doctors in all specialties. Or you can target your search to a particular area, such as ophthalmologists who specialize in both cataract and refractive surgery. Well worth the nominal fee, IMO.
