Feel like I'll fall when I go down the stairs

I'm an IT professional, and just recently I've been feeling that I'm going to fall when I come down the stairs. I then slow down, hold on to the railing and slower steps. Going up is fine. Can anyone help me?

It sounds to me like a problem with depth perception. There are many possible causes. I think that your best bet would be a thorough exam by a general ophthalmologist.

You don't say why you think it's an eye problem. Unless you have a particular reason, such as a recent change of glasses, I would be inclined to suspect an inner ear problem. Some physiotherepists specialise in that domain and have excellent techniques for eliminating the dizziness.

Re: Feel like I'll fall when I go down the stairs

I guessed that tk1's problem might involve depth perception because I have exactly the same issue. In my case, the source of my problem is a slightly damaged retina (secondary to an epiretinal membrane), which impairs my depth perception. I also cling to the rail when going down stairs, although I never had this problem when my retina was intact. (Unfortunately, I live on the second floor of a vintage building and regularly use the "el"--i.e., elevated train--for getting around the city, so I'm always using stairs.) Like tk1, going up stairs is not a major problem for me. (Difficulty going down stairs was actually a screening question at a vitreoretinal clinic I went to.)

Re: Feel like I'll fall when I go down the stairs

Interesting. My wife also recently had a similar problem and hers was diagnosed as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). She could also go up stairs without any problem but looking down caused dizziness. She was sent to a physiotherapist who specialises in that condition and uses a technique known as Epleys Manoevre to re-arrange the crystals in the inner ear. It worked for her.
I guess it could be either of these conditions.
