Hi,
I had a vitrectomy on Nov. 17th, 2011 and I have a cataract now that is very bad. My reg eye dr. has prescribed a contact lens that I wear that has help my vision very much, so i could wait as long as possible to have Cataract surgery. I have an apt. with the Cataract Surgeon this month on the 24th, so i'll see what he says about the risk after a vitrectomy. everything I have found on-line says the risks are higher after a vitrectomy.
I wanted to wait as long as possible, just to let my eye heal after the vitrectomy. Ask you cataract surgeon about your distance vision after surgery. I understand that there is a higher price for some lens to be implanted than others. Some are called "luxury" lens that are suppose to help you see far and near.
I sure hope your surgery goes great!

Re: Cataract Surgery after Vitrectomy

Thank you for responding to my question so quick. Did your doctor that did your vitrectomy tell you to wait so long because my right eye is very bad with the cataract and I cannot see well at all. I work on a computer all day and it is very difficult. The cataract doc said that I am very nearsighted and am negative 8 in both eyes but she is going to fix the right eye to negative 2 and she is going to have me wear a contact in the other eye due to the great difference in my sight. Now that I am reading these post it is making me a little nervous. Do you think it is too soon only 5 months since the vitrectomy? This is the second vitrectomy in this eye I had it done in April 2012 and it did not work with a short acting gas bubble. This time a different doc put in long lasting gas bubble it took 10 weeks to go away.

I know what you mean, I work at a computer too, and it is very difficult to see well. I sometimes have to just close my right eye (cataract eye) and use my left one for typing on my pc. The dr. who done my vitrectomy said I would definately get a cataract, but that it would probably be a year or maybe 5 years before I got it. I'm just been trying to wait at least a year, but the dr. did not tell me to wail at least a year, and I don't think I'll be able to wait until Nov. either.

Why did you have a vitrectomoy?

Re: Cataract Surgery after Vitrectomy

I had a macular hole. I'm not waiting I just hope it is safe for me to do. Because I really can't see good out of the right eye due to the cataract but the hole is definitely closed

Hi Clandy,
Just wandering if you have had your cataract surgery and if so , how it went?
I have my surgery scheduled for Jan. 2013, and I've been researching the different types of IOL's that can be implanted after cataract removal.
Do you know anything about the multifocal lens?
Thanks,
eyemar

Re: Cataract Surgery after Vitrectomy

I am no Dr. but not only are Multifocal lens NOT recommended for Vitrectomy patients, there are a great number of unhappy people after they got various Multifocal lens.

Ask a lot of questions to your Cataract specialist and don't believe all the hype from the lens' manufacturers.

Re: Cataract Surgery after Vitrectomy

I had cataract surgery on Oct 1st 2012 and I may not get my close vision back due to the macular hole surgery I went to doc today and she said because of that surgery it may not get any better. I am still hoping it does. I had a lens for up close vision and the surgery was a breeze. No pain but like I said my up close vision is a little better but not fine print. Hope thisa helps

Hi Clandy!
Thanks for your post. Based on all I've heard, you may still have to have glasses for up close vision, even if you had mult-focal lens. Did your dr. tell you that the risk of cataract surgery were greater, since you had had a prior macular hole surgery?
holler back when you can,
hope you up-close vision gets better!
eyemar
