Unhappy Gray Patches in my Right Eye

For the past several months, I have been having a problem with my right eye. There are a couple of gray-colored patches that are obstructing my vision. One patch is just to the right and below the center of the eyeball, and the other is farther right and above the center of vision. Two days ago, a third patch developed just left of center. All three are grayish and obstruct vision almost completely when the left eye is closed and only the right eye is open. I have had a retinal scan. The doctor has ruled out maculopathy, retinopathy and a number of other conditions such as cataract etc. So what might be causing this problem? I have been referred to a neuro-opthalmologist, but this has only heightened my anxieties. I wouldn’t like to be diagnosed with a brain problem?

Does anybody know of conditions that would cause symptoms similar to what I have?

Re: Gray Patches in my Right Eye

Did you see a retina vitreous specialist? I had the same problem in one of my eyes and found it was due to a retinal branch occlusion.Like a stroke in the eye.The parts that do not get oxygen die and you will get blind spots in your vision. Did your Dr. do the test where they put a red dye into your arm? These occlusions are so tiny that they need special tests to find them. It took 2 retina Dr's in two states to find mine. It did loosen itself and moved but as it was moving I lost all of the sight at two different times, a day apart for only a minute. I still have several blind spots but can still see fairly well.

Sometimes holes in the retina can cause the same problems and can sometimes be sealed with laser.
Wishing you well and keep us posted.

Thanks for your response Alyce. Yes the doctor did inject the red tracer dye in my arm and took photos of the capillaries in both eyes as the dye flowed through them. She said that study was perfectly normal and no occlusions could be identified. She also ruled out retinal tears. I suspect diabetic retinopathy, but two doctors ruled them out after studying the retina and taking pictures of both eyes... There are a few small areas of haemorrhage, but again she said these cannot cause the type of vision loss I am experiencing. I am desperate to get an accurate diagnosis as my vision is rapidly deteriorating; I want to know if those spots will go away or the loss is permanent...

Re: Gray Patches in my Right Eye

When you find out what the problem is please let us know as I am very interested in this. One of my problems with blind spots is called bulious retinoschisis. The layers of the retina split, no holes, but the vitreous fills in the space that is split and makes a raised ball in the eye. This problem is very easy for the Dr. to see. I just had surgery for this two weeks ago. My other eye also had schisis but it got many holes in it and was lasered up to the macula.

Hope you get your diagnosis soon and it can easily be taken care of.Not knowing what is happening to your eyes can be very stressing.

Sending hugs and good thoughts your way.
Alyce
