need surgeon for macular pucker

Can anyone recommend a top surgeon for Macular Pucker vitrectomy (preferrably in NYC, or possibly south Florida)? I've had consultations with two "top" doctors. The first doctor, which I saw at Manhattan Eye and Ear, was rated one of the top retina surgeons in the US, but his bedside manner was non-existent. He was rude and made me feel stupid every time I asked a question. The second doctor from Columbia Presbyterian, was very nice but did not impress me as having much experience.

Did anyone reply to your post? I'm unable to... answer your question as I am in the same situation only on the West Coast, Portland Oregon. I feel so alone!

I did not receive any responses. However, I found what I hope is a good doctor at Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of NY. Telephone 212-861-9797. they are in NY, but perhaps if you call them they can recommend a specialist in your area. I know what you are going through and wish you the best. Jane

Re: need surgeon for macular pucker

Zousie,

Did you have surgery? If you did, how are you doing? Your vision? I have a macular pucker and I was advised by the surgeon to wait until it's bad before doing anything. I am now at that spot, will probably do surgery soon.

I just wondered if found that good surgeon and if so, the outcome.

Diana

Re: need surgeon for macular pucker

I never had the surgery. I did find a good doctor: Dr. Spaide of Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York. However, after much agonizing about the decision, I decided that the risks were just too great. I am very surprised that your doctor told you to wait. I saw a total of 3 macular specialists and all advised to have the surgery sooner rather than later. They say if you wait too long, you will not get good results from surgery. I have now waited over a year, so it is probably too late for me. I am still not sure if I made the right decision. I read books with a Kindle so that I can make the font large. best of luck to you.

Re: need surgeon for macular pucker

Thank you for answering, sorry I didn't get back sooner. Very interesting that we had different advice. I thought about going outside of my HMO and getting more opinions but didn't (too much going on at the time) and now I regret it. It seems from my reading online that the outcome of this surgery isn't that good and one person said they had no vision after. This has scared me! Since he had said to wait until it's bad I did. My vision in my left eye is blurry and wavy but at least there is vision. I haven't seen my Dr for about 3 years and do so in 3 weeks. I'll see what he says and seriously think about getting another opinion. You are on the east coast and I'm in San Diego and will have see who I can find in So Cal. Good luck with your kindle reading. Diana
