My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

Hello, this is my first time on the cancer board and had a few questions. This is kinda long but please bear with me because our whole family is devestated at the news. Here goes....my mother, who is 49 years old has been diagnosed with liver cancer about a week ago. I am 30 years old and am a major mama's boy so this is killing me but I am staying positive. I just have to let my feelings out somewhere.

[content deleted] My mother has had back pain for about a year, we took x-rays, MRI's and CAT scans...everything normal except osteopenia. Well about 2 1/2 weeks ago my mothers stomach started hurting very bad...very very bad. So I took her into the laboratory I run and ran a CBC, Liver panel, Amylase, and Lipase. While I was drawing her blood out of the blue(I had know clue why I did it) I said I am going to drawn some tumor markers just to see. Expecting nothing to come out. I drew a CEA, CA 19-9, and a CA125. I took them and they were ran fast. The first one we got back was the CEA...normal. Great news, I knew they would all come back normal. Then the CA 19-9 came back...3,000!...normal is like 30. I could not believe it so I took the results to a Dr. I work with. He said we need to get a CAT scan of her stomach TODAY. We got it and it showed a swollen gallbladder...whew..gallstones. A CA 19-9 can go high if the bile ducts get clogged with stones. So the Dr. seen my mother...she was in so much apin and looked so pale he admitted her that night. She had to have her gallbladder out NOW. So a surgeon was called in, laproscopic surgery to remove gallbladder next morning. We thought great...get the gallbladder out and feel much better.

When the surgeon walked out of the operating room with picures in his hands and his head down we knew something was wrong. He came into the recovery room with us and said I am afraid I have some bad news for you guys. First... her gallbladder was about to bust. It had five stones, each the size of marbles. It was swollen and pus inside...the surgeon said if had waited it would had burst and she would be gone. Then he took the other pictures and said...While we were in there we look at all th organs to see if anything looks abnormal and we saw a semi-large tumor on her liver, a small one one the other sie of her liver and a small one one the back side of the liver. He said we had to wait for the biopsy to be 100% sure but he was willing to bet his life it was cancer. We cried while she was in recovery....I went in breakdown mode. She came out of recovery and slept until the next morning. Everone in the family gave me the duty of telling her....my mother has liver cancer...how can I do this. I did...and was suprisingly strong when telling her. She was shocked and cried. Well after the bad news the surgeon came in to look at her...she asked him straight out...am I going to die? So he sat down and explained it to me and my mother. First, we have to wait for the biopsy to tell us where it coming from(cancer coming only from the liver is common but not that common...it usually comes from the colon or the dreaded word I did not want to hear the pancreas. He said you now healthy and will get stronger, why because of the tumor marker CA 19-9 and the gallbladder it looks like we caught it early. 90% of her liver is good. The gallbladder was covered in cancer also. We got the results of the biopsy 2 days later...he was right hepatic adenocarcinoma, bad new but also good news because it mentioed nothing about pancreas. Oh we were praying for it not to be int the pancreas. Not in pancreas, thank you lord...he answered one of my prayers. So we went to see an oncologist. Dr. ravi Patel with CBCC affiliated with UCLA(we are in Bakersfield, CA) Patel said my mother recied bad news on her having cancer....but everything else was in her favor....it was caught early, it looks like it is contained in the liver and her CA 19-9 had dropped over 1000 with the removal of the gallbladder. He said we start chem and radiation right away. He wanted a PET scan and another CAT scan. I asked if they could just remove(cut out) the tumors, he said no...if it was just one spot they might, but chemo and radiation was the best way to go. During our appointment with the Radiation Dr. it was decided by both Dr.'s...UCLA is the best place for her since they have alot of stuff they can do there. Since the surgery she is felling fine, sore from the incisions but thats it...felling a little bit tired, but she did not evern need the pain meds they gave he. So we have an appt wit a Dr. Jack Lee of UCLA(a liver specialist) Friday. MY questions are......has or have any of you have liver cancer, have any of you heard of cyrosurgery, or radio frequency treatments. Has anyone heard of Dr. Lee from UCLA. Thanks for your time and your response would be great.

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

I was hoping for at least one response from someone who is dealing with cancer right now or is a survivor. 29 people have looked at my post and no one replied. Do I have computer bad breath or something?

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

hi Tim

That was also what I thought when only one person replied to my post earlier. I am new to writing on a board like this so I was pretty disappointed to say the least when I did not receive any replies (well one I have received).

Let me have a more thorough read through your mail and I shall get back to you. ***** Things are very hectic here with me just right now, but I shall get back to you as soon as possible.

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

Tim,

My mother was recently diagnosed with late stage endometrial cancer. I'm also 30, and my mother is 57. It was quite a shock for all of us, so I understand your worries and fears, particularly since you probably feel the need to be strong for your mom, like I do. I can't give you any insight on treatment, etc. of liver cancer. As for my mom, she had endometrial cancer spread to the ovaries and abdominal cavity, abdominal and para-aortic lymph nodes, and the abdominal wall. We discovered the extent only after mom's radical hysterectomy (her gyn-onc felt that her elevated CA-125 was likely a false positive, until he did a uterine biopsy), so I also had the terrible duty of breaking the news to mom about the extent of her cancer and the need for chemotherapy.

Given the stage and type of tumor, mom's chances aren't great. However: she's healthy and strong, she had no visible tumor remaining (her gyn-onc isn't one of those who believes that 1 cm tumor implants left behind counts as "optimal" debulking - he made sure he got everything he could see), and, well, I'm certain that she's going to be fine. Eventually.

Until then, there's chemotherapy and likely second-look surgery and all the various things that go along with it. I know your mom will be fine, too. You'll be surprised at how quickly this becomes a fairly normal part of your life (unfortunately). Please let me know how things go with your mom & the liver specialist.

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

Oh man, that bites.

My grandfather was diagnosed with bowel cancer, they removed that tumor which would've killed him if it had grown any larger, but... when i ct scan just to examine the bowel spotted a jello like area, we knew there wasn't something right, the day before my grandfather went for sugery, we were faced with the fact that my grampy has liver cancer in the right lobe. Hes going through chemo right now to shrink the tumor, and then were hoping it hasn't spread to the other lobe, as the oncologists want to remove the right lobe of the liver cause the liver can regenerate on only half.

my grandfather is 64 by the way.

First thank you maggie and everyone else. It has been a very stressful time as you can imagine. Well we had our appointment at UCLA with the Liver Specialist for oncology. If you read my first post we were told by the Dr.'s here in Bakersfield(110 miles north of LA.) That she had liver cancer that was non-resectable meaing no surgury for her. Bakersfield DR.s planned chemo and radiation to shrink the tumor and prolong survival. We told the surgeon who took out her gallbladder(btw - UCLA liver specialst said she does not have liver cancer, she has gallbladder cancer that has spead to 2 spots on her liver.) what the Bakersfield dr.s treatment plan was and he said...get a second opinion at UCLA with a Dr. I know. He is a well known liver Dr. Dr. Peter Lee. Well after being told that liver cancer and gallbladder cancer are two very different things and very different cells. So our treatment outlook looks a little better. First the UCLA Dr. wants a MRI at UCLA on Monday, he will push thru the results to try and get them ASAP. IF and its a 60/40 % favorable if the 2 spots are not near major arteries or it has not spread to other organs(it has not, the PET scan showed her liver, not abdomin, colon, pancreas, etc...HE(the UCLA Dr. said he is going to be very aggressive, since she is so young and besides this she is healthy. And he wants to remove them surgically. Were we told down here that could not be done...but we prayed to the Lord for help and I think he is helping us. After the MRI Monday Dr. Lee(the specialist) will talk with the famous liver surgeon who the Dr. said is the best in the USA and figure out how to get them out. He did tell us a regular surgeon would never touch a liver because they are very tricky and sensitive to mes with, but this guy is the best surgeon that works at UCLA. So Ill update you after the MRI...wish us luck that she can have surgery for that is the only known cure fore gallbladder cancer.

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

I really appreciate talking with you maggie x and fluffersocks(sp). I am sorry about your father...pain lingers and eases but it dont ever go away. I know that because I lost my grandmother last year and we were very close. Not as close as me and my mom, but close. I am a real life mama's boy. To a fault I think. She is very co-dependant on me. She feels better when I am here and now more than ever she is needing me around. I live with her even thou I have a great job and can afford to easily buy a house or condo. But I stay with her because she wnats me to. She has 2 other children...my brother and sister. Brother lives in San Diego and my sister lives about 10 minutes away. My sister has been staying with us since this all came down. My stepfather is helpful but he has been through so much in the last 2 years he is numb to the whole situation. He has lost 2 brothers and his mother in a 2 year span and now all he says is "Timmy, I cant lose her too because she is all I have" then starts crying and then I start crying...It gets very emotional. We are a very spiritual family and believe Jesus is our savior and she has been prayed for by our church. I know it was Gods intervention that got us to UCLA where the specialist told us to be agressive and cut it out instead of the Dr. here in Bakersfield saying they cant do surgery and chemo and radiation is all that they could do. We believe that is God's hands helping us.(Sorry to any non-believers who are not spiritual..I dont mean to preach). This is a long post because besides my mother I have no one to talk to and this is my only release, so Im sorry it is so long. She is feeling alright. Some stomach pain that is annoying and shes tired but I tell her she will feel much better after they get done with her to hang in there for one more week. MRI Monday and surgery if possible(which is favorable) is going to be quick and aggressive. I have tell one more story...

As I wrote in my first post I have my degree in Biology ans work as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist here in Bakersfield. So my mother knows nothing about cancer and I am the one explaining what is going on. If I had not drawn that CA 19-9 just out of the blue she would be dead right now. That started the ball rolling and I kept pushing all the Drs. I know to rush and they did, so my mother, who is a huge diamond lover...has about 15 dianmond rings over a caret each, now told me that money and her rings dont matter when you dont know if yourliving or dying. I have always loved one of her stonesDiamond) she had...it is a 1 1/2 caret near flawless diamond appraised at almost 10,000 dollars. She came into my room last week and said I know diamonds dont matter, and you love me and would have done everything because you love me...then set the stone on my dresser and told me to get it into a ring mount so I can wear it and think of her when I look at it. I told her your not going to die, we are cancer survivours...right. She said yes, but you saved my life more than one and I love you and want you to have it to think about me. Needless to say I did not touch the diamond for a while...just cried. My mother is the sweetest , most good hearted person I know. And that is how I know God is going to help us through this. Thanks for reading my very long post.

Tim,

I'm so glad that you've found a good, aggressive physician for your mother, and I wanted to say that I understand - absolutely - why your posts are long on this subject. Please give your mother my best and let us know how the MRI goes.

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

hello Tim
Have only just caught up with your thread. My husband (age 45) has bowel cancer. Spread to liver ; 3 major tumors in right lobe and 2 in left. Originally surgeons would not operate as turmors too large but 3 months of chemo shrunk them down to a manageable size. Particularly the one on left as this was so close to the bile ducts and "stuff". They took away about 60% of liver at start of October and he has recovered well after minor complication with a leaky drain/tube which caused infection. In fact he recovered better from this op than the bowel op. He now cycles every day and drives me mad cos he eats so much

Hope the above hleps.

Ktee

Tim
That story about your mum and the diamond ring is so sweet she must love you very deeply i had tears in my eyes reading it. You have a special bond with your mum like the one i had with my dad i am an only child so my dad gave me all his love thats why i am taking it so badly. There is days when all i do is cry and think about special days but there is days when i can make it through the day without crying too much..
I think you are doing brilliantly you sound a great support to your mum and like you said if you hadn't pushed things she might not be here so be proud of yourself you have achieved a great deal your mum must be so proud...
Take care from me daddy's girl to you mummy's boy..

You are both in my thoughts....maggie..x....

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

Hi Tim,

My heart goes out to you and your family. It seems so many ppl now a days have cancer. I just wanted you to know I am reading your posts and praying your mother has a full recovery. You are a wonderfull son and your mom is so lucky to have you. You will give her the strength to make it though and she will be a surviver.
My mom had a stroke not to long ago and my sister and I sat by her bed every minute of every day till she recovered. A month later she fell sick again with gall stones and pancretitis. Laying in bed so weak and not able to move from the pain caused her to get a lung infection! So now with everything else she had this to fight too. We always told her no matter how bad it got she was going to be ok! So many times she shook her head and said no to us! The nights were hard for us as they would tell us we would have to leave , she was in I.C.U. Even the doctors were telling my sister and I that she might not make it. I truely believe that because my sister and I were there for her she pulled though. I am happy to tell you my mom is doing great and we are still watching her too.

You keep up what you are doing for your mom, she needs you now!! You and your family will fight this together and win!!!

Take care and I will be praying for you!!

Ruby

Re: My Mother Just Diagnosed W/ Liver Cancer

Well we got results from MRI. They advise her not to do surgery right now. They said that she should start chemotherapy first. They found on the MRI ,besides the two tumors they told us, there is a tumor right in the portal vein. It is clogging everything up and surgery they say would be to risky right now. So we start chemo tuesday and when the tumors have shrunk to the size they want maybe they will do surgery.
