well, that is totally up to the doctors. each situation is so different.
my dad is stage 4 colon and his doctor is having him do chemo for 1 month (2 doses) and then recheck the scans.
how are things going there??

Re: How many chemo can my husband have he has stage 4 colon cancer

Yes it depends on the mass, whether or not it has matasticised thru the wall of the colon and/or if its in the glands. Once this has been determined then the Chemo Dr. will setup a plan of attack so to speak. My hubby's was the size of a softball went thru the wall of the colon but had attached to anything else and had not gone into the glands. (cannot think of the official name of those right this minute lol).

He had surgery to remove the mass because he could hardly pass his stool. After about 1 month they began IV chemo daily for 6 weeks and then he took oral chemo meds for 6 MONTHS! During the time he was doing the IV Chemo he was also doing DAILY radiation for 6 WEEKS.

He was stages 3/4. They had told us to get his affairs in order so we are very lucky he is still here. This was all in 2003 and now its 2010.

He was a sick puppy during this treatment he lost about 30 lbs. He was readmitted to the hospital twice for dehydration from vomiting and stuff.

It was a tough road for him but surely worth it.

Hope this helps.

CJ

Re: How many chemo can my husband have he has stage 4 colon cancer

I am sorry that your husband has stage 4. So do I. Mine has spread to the liver. I have been taking treatment for a little over 2 years, for the most part I have a good quality of life. There are side effects at times, but they are manageable. This is my third round of drugs. Please be sure that your husband is at a very good cancer hospital. They will know how best to treat his cancer. Everyone is different. Please be stong for him. And I pray the best for you both.
