Mass in mom's kidney

My mom called me today all upset. She said the doctors found a mass in her kidney the size of a lemon. She says the doctor told her that he is sure it's cancer so he won't even do a biopsy. Is that normal? Also he said if it has spread they won't even bother to remove it. She is freaking out of course. She worked as a nurse for years but I don't think right now that she is able to think clearly. None of the stuff she said the doctor told her makes any sense.

Re: Mass in mom's kidney

90+ percent of kidney tumors are malignant, and even if the tumor lands in the 10% that are benign, they all must be removed-either before they spread, or, before further damage is done to the kidney and the surrounding tissues.

At that size, if it hasn't spread, there is a high possibility it could. Therefore, a quick treatment is recommended as once this cancer metastasizes the survival rate plummets.

Best of luck to you and your mom!
