i think my best friend might be schizophrenic - what do i do?

my friend has been having paranoid delusions (in my opinion, not hers, and she is unaware of my opinion) for several years. on a psychiatrist friend's advice, a couple of years ago i told her i was worried about her and gently requested she see another therapist (as her own, she said, fully bought into the [in my opinion] delusions). she assured me there was no need - i didn't know what else to do.

fast forward to this week, when she told me about several incidents that recently occurred with total strangers - about four people she has never met before volunteered info to her, about her, that they couldn't have known - well, not plausibly, anyway. and i am remembering now that these are not the first instances of this kind, and up until now, i thought she was making them up to convince me that her beliefs are true [because while i have not told her i think she is delusional, i have conveyed skepticism about her beliefs.]

but yesterday it occurred to me that she might not be making instances like this up - she might be hallucinating.

what should/can i do?

Well obviously your friend needs to see a doctor. I don't know how you can get your friend to see one, but it needs to happen. Also, whatever you do, don't stop being her friend. Supporting her through everything is the most important thing in this situation. Other than that, I really don't know what else to say. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.

Also, just curious, how old is she?

45 or 46, i believe... she told me tonight she thinks they are trying to make her go insane.

i am not worried about the steadfastness of my friendship, i am worried that i will be shut out when the day comes that for whatever reason, i can no longer convince her that i am not involved.

how does one tell someone who thinks "they" are trying to drive her crazy that one thinks she is experiencing auditory hallucinations without seriously risking one's position as trusted friend, without which one has no hope of ever having any impact at all?

thank you for the corroboration and advice. they are much appreciated.

Re: i think my best friend might be schizophrenic - what do i do?

Well when I was diagnosed my family kind of just told me the truth; they told me how they truly felt about it. It sucked at first, because I thought they were turning against me, but after a few reluctant doctor visits I realized they were only doing what's best for me. Granted I was 18 when I was diagnosed, so there's not much else I could do besides just go along with what they were telling me, but I really feel that if you sit her down and explain your concerns maybe she will understand that it's for her own good.

She will not hear you. Just be there for her, listen to her and see if you can get her to see somebody who can 'counsel' her about the plots against her. It may scare her more if she thinks she is 'going mad'.
You cannot fix this, or change her thinking. If you can get her somehow to a doctor, then that is all you can do.
