| Schizoaffective disorder - son
My son, age 27, was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. His behavior has improved since he was in the hospital three years ago. His speech is more coherent and he leaves the house sometimes to take a walk. Most of the time he stays alone in his room. My wife and I are agreed that we are not equipped to deal with him effectively.
After he left the hospital, he stopped taking the prescribed medication (Lexapro and Risperdal) and refuses to see a therapist. He has no employment history, no job skills and minimal social skills. My other son, who is 31, now refuses to talk to us because he thinks we are "enablers", i.e., we should force the mentally ill son into a permanent institution.
It seems clear that this is having a destructive effect on my family. I would like to hear from other families in similar situations - particularly how to deal with schizoaffective disorder.
