Anyone know name for "seeking surgeries for pain medication"

My close circle of friends has watched the steady decline of one of our group, and I am seeking the name for his behavior, because I am sure he is not the only one. I am hoping someone here can tell me a name for what I will describe below.

In the ten years I have known this man, he has had a pattern of seeking surgeries that have debilitated him from an active working man with a great job into one who know cannot even walk. He seems to love the medications so much that he has to keep himself in pain. Talking about his pain is all he talks about. He has gone from a bass player in the band to a man who spends all his time in bed. Meanwhile, the amount of pain medication has grown into a monster.

He never does the recovery part of the surgery, such as the physical therapy, the walking, any of the aftercare needed to recover from serious surgeries. 3 Back surgeries, two knee replacements, now a hip replacement, and he has been reduced to a hunchback who has aged 30 years in the last 10.

This has to have some name..any ideas?

That makes sense, although it is heartbreaking to realize that possibility. I have heard several accounts of Munchhausen in action.

My urge is to follow the rest of our group and step away. I am disabled with strokes, and do not drive beyond my small neighborhood. Following his last surgery last week, my son drove and we picked him up from the hospital. The next day he asked me to drive him to his first follow up appointment, which I declined, as it would require me to drive into a neighborhood far beyond my comfort zone.

I do not endorse or want to support this behavior from anyone, and have told me not to expect me to transport him to and from appointments. I have a very difficult medical history and my goal is to protect myself from anything negative, while focusing on my sons and my husband and a positive approach to life.

I will explore the munchhausen and I thank you for your response.
