Question does anyone know the difference between fibro pain and the pain caused by lipitor?

i saw on another thread that someone is taking lipitor and was worried about whether the pain they were having was from that.

my rhemy/gen. pract. wants me to take lipitor for high cholesterol. i am concerned because i feel i may not be able to recognize the pain from the muscle disorder lipitor can cause. my psychiatrist has one patient that has been rendered unable to walk due to lipitor use.

my cholesterol isn't outrageously high, all things considered, and i am on a very different diet now (many more veggies and much less fat), and am exercising. i plan to keep this up because i need to lose a lot of weight.

i was just wondering if anyone knows how to spot the difference.

I'm new here and trying to find out how to reply. And I goofed!

I have FM. Right after I was diagnosed I retired (in 1999) from being a legal asst. and am collecting SS Disability.

I have cholesterol of 240 without med and 200 with med. When they told me about being watchful for muscle pain with my med, which is Lovistatin, I laughed and said how would I ever tell? He said it will be so severe you will be able to tell.

I only take 1/2 of my med, or 5 mg. He prescribed 10 mg but I wanted to see what taking 1/2 of that amount would do for me. Cut down on the chances of any type of side effects. So far, he's happy with what 5 mg is doing and so we're staying with it.

Is there a difference with Lipitor as opposed to other "statin" drugs as far as the risks involved? I don't blame you for being very careful.

I also watch what I eat and have just been able to begin walking 5 days a week for 1/2 hour. They say it doesn't have to 1/2 hour all at once. It can be 10 minutes here and there. Right now im am able to do 1/2 hour at a time. But that's just recently.

Let us know how you do because many have the same question you posed.

God Bless!
Marcia

Re: does anyone know the difference between fibro pain and the pain caused by lipitor?

Thanks Marcia!

My cholesterol is 255. I am also incredibly obese right now.

About 15 years ago, I weighed 120 pounds on my 5'7" frame, and my cholesterol was 200. Not much difference.

High cholesterol runs in my family (my mom's was 370 at one point).

I think what I'll do is try the diet and exercise and see if that works. My problem is, that if there is a strange, rare, unbearable side effect for any med, I seem to get it. So I'm very worried about the Lipitor.

Good for you for walking and taking care of yourself! I do 10 minutes a day on my elliptical, and am eventually going to try to get back t0 45 minutes, where I was a few years ago.

Thanks again!

Re: does anyone know the difference between fibro pain and the pain caused by lipitor?

I don't know how others with Fibro taking Lipator responded, but after taking one pill, I had never been in so much muscle pain all over my entire body. It was like multiplying Fibro x 100. It put me in bed for an entire day and the pain was so bad, I was actually able to sleep most of the day since my brain could not deal with the intensity. My dr. then told me to take a 1000 mg flaxseed oil capsule every day and it has helped keep my cholestrol level at the borderline.
