Is anyone here taking Bextra?

My neurologist prescribed Bextra and ortho surgeon wants to try Celebrex. Neurologist says to stay on the Bextra and Ultracet for pain due to Osteo Arthritis, Tendonitis, FMS and Carpal Tunnel in right wrist and forearm.

Just wondered if anyone has had luck with these drugs??

Re: Is anyone here taking Bextra?

I took bunch of samples of Bextra the physiatrist had given me and one month's prescription, but stopped after that as the only thing it did was cost me $80. I have arthritis, but not sure what type. I did not have any success with Celebrex either. It will be interesting to see what rheumatologist tries me on as I have not had success with any drugs tried thus far which include Vioxx, Elavil, Vicodin, Celestone injection, Motrin, and I am sure there are others. However, each of us reacts so differently to drugs that I give everything a try as you never know when right combination may come along. Bextra is new, but in same class as Celebrex COX-2 inhibitor. I think I need a different class to get some class! (TT)

Re: Is anyone here taking Bextra?

I have never heard of Bextra, however this is strange, but true. After having severe headaches for more than five years, I knew it was time to lay off the Goody Powders and try and get help. Before I learned about FMS/CFS, I was sent to a ear, nose and throat specialist who ran several tests and x-rays, only to find that my sinuses were fine. He asked if I had ever had meningitis, too, I suppose because of the severe neck and shoulder stiffness I was having. He then prescribed Allegra D. After one week of Allegra D, I was addicted, though not in the regular sense. They actually seemed to be working to control a large percentage of the pain when I was having headaches. I still had the headaches, just not as severe. They did not help with the other parts of my body though; just the head. What the weirdest part of this is, is that I have no known allergies except to anything cold, in which I break out in hives. I never had watery, itchy eyes, no runny nose, sneezing or coughing, sore throat or any of the other symptoms of allergies. Again, just the severe headaches. My mom was on Vioxx at one time along with Neurontin and has tried numerous other meds. She said basically the same as you; it was a waste of time and money. She also said she just started telling the Dr's her meds were working to keep them from switching her once again, only to have the next "fad" med not work. I don't know if I agree with her on doing that but I suppose after some time of not getting relief she just threw in the towel. I am sure it is quite frustrating. I have not started playing the med. game yet. Dr. told me yesterday that he could not do anything until after I have the baby, so I go back next month.

Hi! I have used Viox, Celebrex, and a perscription strength Nsaid, and they tore up my stomach really bad. I have a hiatial hernia. I've been taking Bextra, Tramadol, and Topamax and this seems to be the mix I needed. The Bextra does not cause any problems with my stomach, so I've been a happy camper. It does not totally releave all the pain, but it does make it possible to function better.

Hi M. Chickpea (cute name),

I tried Bextra when I was first diagnosed with Fibro, but it gave me awful diarhhea (spelling?) almost immediately after taking it. I already had IBS due to the Fibro, so it didn't work for me, but I have heard a lot of praise from others.

All you can do, like the rest of us, is try and try again, until you find just the right "cocktail" that helps you. Now mind you, there isn't anything out there that takes away all your symptoms, but I know with trial and error, you can find a mix of meds that at least will help you "maintain" your condition.

You may want to check out some "organic" websites that list certain herbs, and ammino acid supplements for Fibro. I also take a range of different supplements. Hey, I can't claim they DON'T work as I haven't really stopped taking them, but I don't feel any worse.

I take a multivitamin pack that is created just for Fibro, which includes Malic Acid, that seems to be a biggie for helping Fibro. Just search around some of the Fibro websites or some of the "nutrition" websites and see if they list Fibro or CFS.

Good luck
tk

I take Bextra. In fact, I just ran out and I'm waiting for my doctor to refil my prescription. I didn't realize how much it was working till I ran out. It's been a week and my knees and hands are killing me. I can hardly walk up and down stairs! So it has helped me. But, as the others have said...what works for me may not work for you. I guess you just have to try something and if it works, then stick with it.

Re: Is anyone here taking Bextra?

I also tried a variety of NSAIDS - naprosyn , vioxx , celebrex all of which aggravated my stomach. I currently am taking bextra 20 mg a day with Neurontin 1.8 g/day and flexeril and vicodin. The bextra so far has not bothered my stomach at all and I have been using it for a couple of months.
For me,the med that has helped my fibro the most has been the Neurontin
but I know everyone reacts differently in regards to meds,etc...I will say my
current dose of Neurontin took awhile to get used to...but now I do not feel
less alert,etc..Hope this helps...

Re: Is anyone here taking Bextra?

Gotta love that Bextra. I also tried Celebrex and Naprosyn and had to stop both after developing stomach problems. No side effects from Bextra (that I am aware of) and it takes care of the pain.

Re: Is anyone here taking Bextra?

I was highly recommended to Bextra from a friend who works in a Rheumy's office. I suggested it to my Rheumy and she prescribed it. Two weeks and no relief, but as others have said, it doesn't mean it will not work for you. I have read from several fibro patients that they did not have much luck with it.

Hope it works for you!

Re: Is anyone here taking Bextra?

I also want to add that, although the Bextra helps the joints...it does nothing for my back mucsles. I still have muscle spasms. It just cuts down on some of the other aches and pains.

Re: Is anyone here taking Bextra?

Hi Everyone. Thanx for the responses to my question.
The Bextra + Ultracet does help, so I'm staying on both until we reach another plateau and have to part ways and try another mixture. It really is sooo sad the challenges that each and everyone of us are going thru just to live a partially painfree life. My heart goes out to all of you in your ongoing search for peace and pain mgmnt.. Hang in there my friends; one day they'll figure it all out and know that we were very ill and really did need help desparately!!

With hope and caring,
